Why does the pool water smell bad?

The main sources of odor in water are:

1) Odor produced by the growth and decay of aquatic organisms, plants, or microorganisms in the water.

2) Odor produced by the decomposition of decaying organic matter in the water.

3) Odor produced by dissolved gases in the water, such as SO2, H2S, and NH3.

4) Odor from dissolved salts or soil.

5) Odor from impurities in industrial wastewater discharged into water bodies, such as oil and phenols.

6) Odor produced by chlorine added during disinfection.

Due to the above reasons, some water may have an odor. For example, lake and swamp water often has a fishy or musty smell due to algae growth or excessive organic matter; turbid river water often has an earthy or astringent taste; hot spring water often has a sulfur smell; groundwater may have a hydrogen sulfide smell.

Pure water is an odorless, tasteless, colorless, and transparent liquid, but polluted water bodies often have unusual odors that can be detected by the nose (odor) or mouth (taste).
