The main sources of odor in water are:

1) The odor emitted by the breeding and decay of aquatic organisms, plants, or microorganisms in the water.

2) The odor emitted by the decay and decomposition of organic matter in the water.

3) The odor of dissolved gases such as SO2, H2S, and NH3 in the water.

4) The smell of dissolved salts or soil.

5) The impurities contained in industrial wastewater discharged into the water body, such as petroleum and phenols, which have an odor.

6) The smell of chlorine gas added during disinfection.

Due to the above reasons, some water may have an odor. For example, lake and swamp water often has a fishy and musty smell due to algae growth or excessive organic matter;

turbid river water often has an earthy or astringent smell; hot spring water often has a sulfuric acid smell; groundwater often has a hydrogen sulfide smell.

Generally speaking: Water with higher oxygen content, water with more organic matter, water with more NO2 often has an abnormal sweet taste; water containing sodium chloride has a salty taste; water containing magnesium sulfate and sodium sulfate has a bitter taste; water containing iron has an astringent taste; while the taste of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater varies.
