What is used to disinfect swimming pools?

Swimming pool disinfection is crucial; improper handling can turn it into a breeding ground for disease. The suitable temperature of swimming pool water provides an ideal environment for pathogens such as typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, hepatitis, acute conjunctivitis, and pyoderma. Hepatitis and encephalitis viruses are often transmitted through waterborne diseases.

The most common method for swimming pool disinfection is chlorination. Chlorine in water produces hypochlorous acid, which diffuses to the surface of bacteria, penetrates the cell membrane, and enters the cell. The oxidation of chlorine atoms disrupts the enzymatic systems within the bacteria, ultimately leading to their death.

A key feature of chlorine disinfection is the ability to maintain an appropriate residual chlorine level in the disinfected pool water as needed. This ensures continuous disinfection of pool water constantly exposed to human contamination. Generally, the residual chlorine level in swimming pool water should be 0.4–0.6 mg/L. Additionally, to ensure disinfectant efficiency and prevent Pool equipment and corrosion of the swimming pool surface, the pH of the swimming pool water should be maintained at 7.4–7.6.
